STUDENT BEHAVIOUR POLICY
Divya Public School ensure that , at all times , there is an atmosphere and ethos that
supports and encourages learning , based on respect for the individual.
Positive behaviour is at the heart of a learning centred school.

Every student has the right to be taught in environments that are safe, conducive to learning and
free from disruption.

Every member of the staff has the right to work in an environment that supports and enables them to
provide a positive learning experience to all students.
Where individual or group behaviour that prevents learning in an ordered and supportive environment is
challenged and appropriate action taken.
Responsiblities
- Divya Public School management is responsible for ensuring a clear behaviour policy is in place in
the school.
- Principal is responsible for the implementation of the behaviour policy and for using the
guidelines provided to ensure that every member of the school community is aware of the expectations
that exist and the procedures that will be followed to ensure there is a positive learning
environment.
- School staff is responsible for ensuring the policy and procedures are followed in school.
- Students are responsible for their personal conduct and for contributing to a positive school
environment by maintaining order, self- discipline and consideration for the rights and property of
others.

Students Rights
Each student has the responsibility to: -
- Respect the right of others.
- Maintain neat and clean personal clothing and hygiene.
- Respect the Property of others, including keeping all books, facilities and materials used in the
school in good condition.
- Refrain from fighting, disruptive behaviour, acting in such a manner as to risk injury to others,
using threats or intimidation against others, theft, or any other unlawful activity.
- Be prompt to school and classes.
- Refrain from inappropriate classroom behaviour
- Learn to preserve and protect the environment in school.
- Refrain from possession, use or transmission of any alcoholic beverages, tobacco product or drugs.
At Assembly
- To be in designated area at the first bell.
- Lines to be formed immediately, no talking in groups.
- Stand to attention during National Anthem.
- Listen attentively to announcements, presentations etc.
- Quick smart dispersal in lines to respective classes.
In classrooms
- No running around, yelling across room or throwing things across.
- No scribbling on the desks, walls, boards, etc.
- To be respectful, courteous, and polite to classmates and teachers at all times.
- Stand and greet staff members / guests who enter classroom.
- Do not leave classrooms without permission. Inform monitor and class teacher.
- All litter to be disposed off in the bin provided.
- Fans and lights to be switched off when leaving the room .
- Leave together in lines to Labs, Library and P.E.
In the Hallways
- Walk in lines at all times, quickly and smartly to the next clss.
- Take care of corridor bulletin boards.
- Greet staff / Guests in the hallways.
During Recess
- Keep classroom and corridors safe , clean and quiet . Do not spill drinks , ffod.
- Orderly lines at canteen. Dispose off litter correctly.
- Return to classrooms at first bell and be ready for the next class.
- Do not enter other classrooms.
General
- Mobiles , MP3 players, CDs , Books (other then Syllabus) magzines etc are strictly
forbidden.
- School phones are available for contacting parents.
- School bags should be neat , of a manageable size , well – maintained and must carry only
the books required for the day specifically.
Punctuality
- To school , at assembly and at every class is utmost importance.
- Regular attendance during the entire school year of prime importance.
Work Ethics
- To be regular, up - to - date with work done daily in class.
- Class work and home work to be diligently completed & handed in on time for correction.
- All bags, books etc to be left outside classroom in a neat line
- No unfair means to be resorted to . No marks will be awarded if unfair means is used .
- Be prepared with own set of pens , pencils , geometry box.es etc , no borrowing / lending
permitted.
- Any doubt in question paper or otherwise to be cleared with invigilator on duty.
- Talking to another student strictly not permitted.
In the Auditorium
- Disciplined behaviour at all the times.
- Move in neat lines from classrooms to auditorium .
- No talking during presentations/ address by guest speakers / when the compere speaks..
- No unfair means to be resorted to . No marks will be awarded if unfair means is used .
- Disciplined , quick, orderly dispersal at the end.
- Co-operation and courtesy to be shown to all.
In the infirmary
- Inform the class teacher and supervisor immediately of any student in need of medical help.
- Teacher on duty will supervise sending student to clinic
- Bus driver to be informed if a student goes home with parents.
In the washroom
- Turn off taps , when not in use. Always use water economically.
- Leave the washroom clean as a courtesy to the next student.
- Dispose of litter in the bins provided.
- Do not scribble on doors and walls etc.
- Do not waste time standing in groups , talking . be mindful of others who need to use the
facilities.
In library
- Food and drinks are not permitted in the libraries.
- The general expectation is that all activites in the libraries will be conducted in a quiet
manner to avoid disturbing other library users.
- Furniture is placed for safety and maximum use of space. Do not move the furniture , including
chairs in the conference rooms or computer lab.
- Users are required to use library equipment for designated purposes only.
- Do not waste time standing in groups , talking . be mindful of others who need to use the
facilities.
BEHAVIOUR EXPECTATIONS
UNIFORM
- To be worn smartly and neatly - well washed and ironed.
- Socks shin length , shoes well polished.
- Hair neatly trimmed , no nail polish.
- Tiny rings or studs in ears for girls . no multiple earings. No nose and finger rings.
In the Bus
- Courteous and polite to all./li>
- Offers seats to all , make room so all are seated comfortably.
- Speak at acceptable noise level.
- All speech to be respectful , courteous , polite and friendly.
- Must use the assigned bus to travel to and from and same pick up and drop off point .
- No eatables / drinks allowed in the school bus.
Expectations from staff (involvement in handling student behaviour
issues.)
- Attendance to be taken daily in the first period by the class teacher and every period by
respective subject teachers.
- Head of sections to be informed of any missing student. Monitore to take up this responsibility as
well.
- Parents to be contacted for any absent student- even if only for a day. Insist on leave notes.
- Lonf absentees to be reported to Heads of sections without undue delay. Regular periodic reminders
and surprise checks of bags and nails etc.
- Regular reminders of basic school rules on behaviour , uniform , punctuality , leave notes etc.
- Regular contact with parents on academic / behaviour problems.
- Be informed of medical problems of students. Inform head of sections , other members , and clinic
staff.
- Reinforce good behaviour with a note of appreciation.
- Reward students for community / extra - curricular activites.
- Assign mentors for academically weak students who display unacceptable behaviour .
- Pace syllabus comfortably , assign home work , class work thoughtfully with adequate time for
submission.
- No student to be sent / or made to stand outside the classroom as punishment.
- No personal , derogatory remarks to be made to students , no matter what the situation.
- Always deal firmly but justly and kindly with every child .
- Poor maintenance of uniform and personal grooming flaws may be discussed personally and privately
with students and parents.
- Non payment of fees to be discussed personally and privately with parents. Students must never be
humiliated , no matter what.
- Set examples of high standards of discipline , academic work , behaviour , speech for students to
follow.
- Do not accept sloppy behaviour, unacceptable speech, mannerisms. Guide student towards right social
norms. Challenge them to higher standards, in everything, help develop their interpersonal skills.
- Student behaviour is the corporate responsibility of the entire school staff. teachers are expected
to ensure that students irrespective of whether they teach them or not, are well behaved in school,
in the buses or outside school when on field trips or school outings.
- Be extra vigilant about new students and new staff members. help them settle in comfortably.
- Create a culture of responsibility, compassion, team work, nurturing, caring and support within the
classroom so that is reflected in the school community and beyond the school.
- Provide the purpose for every classroom activity undertaken
- Know your students beyond the classroom, understand their aspirations, goals, limitations, talents
and family background
- Give each student some responsibility that will boost their self-esteem and dignity. recognize
their abilities while assigning their portfolios.
- Get to know the parents of your students. involve them within the school structure for
presentations, demonstrations, field trips etc.
HOW TO HANDLE DISCIPLINE PROBLEMS
- Intervene quickly, do not allow behaviour that violates school or classroom rules to go unchecked.
- Train students with behaviour problems in self control skills. Teach them how to observe their own
behaviour , talk to them through appropriate behaviour patterns and reinforce them for succeeding.
- Place misbehaving students in peer tutoring arrangements , have them serve either as tutor or
tutees as appropriate .
- Provide support to help students improve their behaviour.
- Make use of counseling services for students with behaviour problems . counseling should seek the
cause of misconduct and assess students in developing needed skills to behave appropriately.
- Make use of home based reinforcements to increase the effectiveness of the school based agreements
and directives.
SOME UNACCEPTABLE BEHAVIOUR CHOICES
- Classwork/ homework / project not completed or submitted on time.
- Text books / notebooks not brought as required.
- Constant distraction or lack of concentration.
- Chewing gum
- Bullying / fighting / swearing / bunking classes or school
- Absence without leave note.
- Fee defaulters
- Disobedience / misbehaviour
- Bringing unwanted literature / equipment CD's / Mobile phones to school
- Untidy turnout
- Bringing valuables and large amount of cash.
COMMON WAYS OF DEALING WITH BULLYING, FIGHTING OR ARROGANCE
- Talk to the students and counsel them.
- Contact parents by telephone. Appraise, discuss and decide on a partnership strategy.
- Assign responsibilities
- Give recognition on small achievements
- Listen to both parties and get written statement/ apology as well
- Talk extensively on basic moral values/ level of expected good behaviour at the assemblies or in
class.
- Enquire about the home atmosphere or family problems, if any.
DEALING WITH BUNKING SCHOOL/ CLASSES
- Class teachers are instructed to do random checks whenever a student is absent for 2 days or more.
- Insist on leave note in diary in case of 1 or 2 days leave and official leave letter in case of
long leave.
- Contact parents in case of long leave without letter.
- Check with driver / conductor, in case of doubtful cases, if they picked up the child from the
stop.
- If a student is caught, his / her parents are called and a warning / suspension letter is issued.
BEHAVIOUR EXPECTATIONS
WRONG UNIFORM
- Inspection of uniform by class teacher/ coordinator.
- Finding out the reason for wrong uniform.
- Student advised to be in proper uniform.
- Inform parents.
- First warning and diary note.
WRONG HAIR CUT / HAIR COLOUR
- Advise to get acceptable hair cut
- Note in the diary and follow up
- Given 3-4 days time to comply.
WEARING ACCESSORIES
- First warn them and then confiscate the items and return only to the parent at the end of the
term.
- Call parents.
PROPERTY DAMAGE
- Personally go to the classroom investigate and inspect and then inform administrative officer.
- Inform the parents and then ask them to pay for the damage.
SCRIBBLING ON THE DESKS
- Counsel the student and follow up Counsel the student and follow up
- Speak to class
- Appoint monitors to be vigilant and inform the class teacher / supervisor.
- If caught, make student clean the desk and write an apology note.
CHILDREN COMING IN LATE
- Maintain record in diary
- Parents are contacted if not convinced by student’s statement
- Inform/ call parents
- Children who perpetually come late are made to miss a period or two
- Warning given
BRINGING VALUABLES AND CASH / UNWANTED ITEMS / LITERATURE
- Items confiscated
- Parents informed and items returned to parents
- Regular and surprise checks of school bags.
- Strict action like warning, suspension from the school for few days(depends on situation)
CHEATING IN EXAMINATIONS
- For cheating in an examination student will be awarded zero in that particular subject. parent is
called and child is counseled not to repeat it in future.
DISCIPLINARY LEVELS
Decision on the disciplinary action that will follow poor behaviour should be rational. Severe levels
(5-6) shall be applied depending on the seriousness of the offence. For example, if a student is absent
without information for a day for the first time, you will apply level 1 and encourage the student to
get a signed letter by parent. on the other hand, if a student injures another willfully, you may like
to apply 4,5or 6.
- VERBAL WARNING
- NOTE IN STUDENT’S DIARY BY THE CLASS TEACHER AND COUNTERSIGNED BY THE PARENTS.
- PARENTS/ TEACHERS/COUNSELOR / STUDENT MEETING COORDINATOR. PARENT AND STUDENT APPRAISED OF
CONSEQUENCES
- REPORT TO THE PRINCIPAL FOR ACTION. SUSPENSION FOR A DAY
- SUSPENSION FOR THREE DAYS OR MORE AS PER SITUATION OR LEVEL OF MISTAKE
- EXPULSION.
